Building Cruising Skills and Knowledge

These are photos of GCCC members on the August 2010 Cruise and Learn weekend.  Our group was led by Capt. Ron Rose and the participating members chose to work on:

  • Using "Prop Wash" and "Prop Walk" to their advantage when Docking

  • Sail Trim

  • Crew overboard recoveries

The typical Cruise and Learn weekend begins on a Friday afternoon and runs to early Sunday afternoon.  We use up to two vessels and instructors on a first come first serve basis.  Events are typically scheduled two(2) months in advance.

The crew was happy to find plenty of pelicans, dolphins, beautiful clear waters and white sandy beaches around Pensacola Pass and across our area.  Being from out of town and listening to national news coverage, they arrived believing that we were covered in oil.  AS THEY FOUND OUT....IT WASN'T TRUE.

OIL IMPACTS AROUND PENSACOLA WERE MINIMAL AND IMMEDIATELY CLEANED UP.  The beaches are not crowded and the hotel deals are superb, as everyone discovered.

The weather was sunny and warm.  George kept volunteering to substitute himself for our normal man overboard victim ( the TYPE II floatation device under his left arm ).

David, asking for a little help in keeping an eye on some traffic entering the Pensacola Pass as we return from a short run in the Gulf of  Mexico.

Our Pensacola Light (1859) is a working light house and one of many historic attractions we see along our waterways.  One of our crew members suggested that others should consider taking the light house tour and it's ghost tour around Halloween.  Yes, it made the Discovery Channel's most haunted places in America.  He was planning to bring his family back for a second year, since they enjoyed the tour so much in 2009.
